About the process

This information will only be used to determine whether a candidate meets the minimum criteria for the interview process. Packages become the property of the Alaska Air National Guard to be retained or disposed of at our discretion. Applications will be accepted and must be received by this office before the package deadline at the top of this page.

The top applicants will be called for a formal interview. The UNT Selection Board will then select combat systems operators for the HC-130. Primaries and alternates will be selected. These training slots will be for three fiscal years beyond the interview board year. For example, the 2019 board will select for fiscal year 2022 (October 2021 – September 2022). However, it may be possible if selected, to attend training earlier than those dates. Alternates from prior boards are welcome to resubmit an application package. If a primary candidate becomes unable or ineligible to attend UNT, then an alternate will fill the slot.

A note about planning ahead

The potential holdup for the application package is the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT). Plan on an approximate two-week lead time (actual lead times may vary at your testing location) to schedule the AFOQT and another two weeks to receive you scores.

Air Force Instruction (AFI) 36-2105, Applying for Flying Training, Air Battle Manager, and Astronaut Programs is the governing regulation for the application process. Some areas to highlight are as follows:

  • Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve applicants must not exceed their 30th birthday or 5 years beyond their Total Federal Commissioned Service Date (TFCSD)* by their assigned UNT class start date (i.e., the UNT class start date may not be later than the date of the applicant’s 30th birthday).

  • These age and service limitations can be waived, so we don’t follow them strictly.

*TFCSD starts the day you were commissioned and keeps counting unless you have resigned your commission. Even if you are Inactive Ready Reserve, your days/years continue to count against the 5 year restriction.

What this means to you is that you must plan ahead. We hire 2-3 years in advance so apply early to achieve your goals.
