Alaska Air National Guard at Hurricane Ike

About 12 hours before Hurrican Ike hit Texas, the Alaska Air National Guard was evacuating Gulf Coast residents who underwent a last-minute change of heart in the face of the hurricane's flood surge. The 176th Wing deployed two helicopters and about 30 wing members to the Gulf Coast region Sept. 1 to perform expected search-and-rescue missions in the wake of Hurricane Gustav. They remained on-station to aid rescue efforts relating to Hurricane Ike. Alaska Air National Guard photo by TSgt. Sean Mitchell.
