KULIS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Alaska ? Members from the 176th Maintenance Group tow a HC-130N from hangar 1, building 3, Jan. 18, 2011. This aircraft is the last aircraft to go through an isochronal inspection ? a detailed assessment and repairs of the aircraft from tip to tail and everything in between - before the 176th Wing relocates from Kulis Air National Guard Base to Elmendorf per the 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment proposal. Hangar 1 in its many incarnations has been in service since 1955 where maintainers worked on the T-6G Texan Trainer to the F-80 "Shooting Star" jet fighter. Kevin McElhoes, a C-17 crew chief with the 176th Wing's 249th Airlift Squadron, guides a Mississippi Air National Guard C-17 onto the flightline at Kulis Air National Guard Base, Alaska on Sept. 17, 2008. The C-17 Globemaster III carried two PaveHawk helicopters and their crews from the wing's 210th Rescue Squadron; and a group of pararescuers from the wing's 212th Rescue Squadron. The wing members deployed to the Gulf Coast region Sept. 1 to perform search-and-rescue operations in the aftermath of hurricanes Gustav and Ike. They were credited saving 16 lives during the mission.
